Hey, I'm planning a map for a voxel based game called "Minecraft" in wich i want to recreate the battlefield of Waterloo, I make maps for it with external programs like World Machine and World Painter, in this minecraft I can put a heightmap as input, so I looked on internet for some Waterloo heightmap, but I didn't found anything, I used the SRTM method but I'm not able to find the correct location, where i can cut the heightmap...

This was what I was looking for, it's awesome, but the problem is that the .bmp file has strange color transitions and give me this as result (http://i.imgur.com/45MMgOP.png)
So, I saw that a lot of people around here is doing exact the same thing, only in a different game (sorry that I use this forum for this purpouse, but it seems that a lot of nice peoples are using it).
So I ask you if someone has a Heightmap or something that i can open with microdem that shows me the elevations of the battlefield!
P.S If anyone is interested in the project he can help me with his historical knowledge by giving me the "seal of approval" if the world that I do is recognizable as Waterloo, or if you play Minecraft and are good at building you can help with the buildings!

Google Earth is a very good reference for heights, just beware of the parts of the battlefield that have been modified.

Yes, I used google earth, but with the SRTM plugin i could not recognize where I had to cut to obtain a precise heightmap of the battlefield!

Yes, great Nix work.
For HW we can use Brucepos menual.
For map with satellite elevations you have to read a Brucepos Manual in the non official depot.

Then follow his explanations.
Anyway is not so easy make a satellite map.
You have to setting option in Google earth (decimal degree and distance in kilometers)
Find your location and take note of Latitude and longitude (left upper point and bottom right point for you map)
I use this link to download the data.
http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/
setting input coordinates,decimal degree and ArcInfoASCII.Then download the srtm data and follow Brucepos manual.
If you use for your program the color transistions of .bmp file of HW map ,sorry but i cannot help you.

For a Waterloo map of 10km x 7.5km you need the srtm 37_02 file.
You can use
Left top point of map latitude ->50.70469 long->4.33309 (decimal degrees)
Right bottom 50.63706 long ->4.47462

I need an elevation map like this (http://i.imgur.com/iC1N1BW.png)
(This is the srtm of the zone where the battlefield of Waterloo is inside)
It's a greyscale map, but I can also use an .asc file that is exact the lat and long of waterloo!
But from the SRTM files I can only download the 1 degree files, and they are too big, so i have to cut them, but i dont know where to cut...

it is also possible make a matrix txt file (100x75 points) with scilab program with my previous settings for a 10kmx7.5km map with Waterloo inside,but using always the srtm resolution in degrees.
But more of this, i do not know how help you.

No,
scilab and with script text file, makes a little matrix from a very big matrix (srtm file).

two questions
How much do you want the map with reliefs with waterloo inside ? in kilometers.
Is it enough the resolution of srtm ? each reliefs is every 90 meters in length and 60 meters in high (i do not remeber well)

Se tu vuoi è possibile creare una piccola matrice così , in ascii

tutti i valori sono in metri (altezze)
i punti orizzontali sono a una distanza di 90 metri
tra una riga e l'altra ci sono 60 metri in altezza. (il 22 rimane a 60 metri dal punto in alto a 45)
tra il 45 e il 92 c'è una distanza di 90 metri.
Dove tu puoi inserire i valori a mano nel tuo programma.
ma è una matrice di 100 *75 in pratica 7500 altezze da inserire a mano,un pò troppo :mrgreen:

Beh, io non me ne intendo tanto quale zona del campo da battaglia prendere, ma vedo che in molti avete preso quella 10km x 7km, quindi prendo anchio quella, magari riesco a tagliare l'immagine contando i pixel, ma diventa un po un casino... potresti dirmi le coordinate lat e long degli angoli della mappa!

La più piccola mappa possibile fatta nello stesso modo come ho fatto per la 10km x 7.5km , ieri
è 6 km x 4.5 km

Allora uso quella 10x7 perchè in Minecraft divido tutto per 10, mi verrebbe una mappa di 1km x 700m che è apposto...
Ma chiedo ancora, hai le coordinate dei vertici della mappa presi da google earth? sarebbe comodissimo per me!

Latitude e longitudine sono quelle di ieri, per la 10km x 7.5km.
Tu apri google earth,setta nelle opzioni gradi decimali e distanza in km.
Poi cerca la prima latitudine e longitudine che ti ho dato ieri,da li con il righello vai orizzontalmenti a destra per 10 km facendo attenzione che i gradi siano esattamente o 90 o 180 altrimenti lavoreresti con una mappa con linee leggermente oblique.
alla fine salvi la linea e da li parti vericalmente in basso per 7.5 km.
Nei miei settaggi Waterloo rimane al centro , ma in alto.
Vedi se ti va bene altrimenti puoi partire da un'altra posizione , con lo stesso metodo in modo da situare Waterloo più in basso,
Cmq salva sempre le linee che fai così puoi sempre rilevare lat e long dei punti che interessano per fare la mappa.

Bel lavoro mi sembra. ;)
Poi tu sai giudicare meglio per il tuo obbiettivo.
Le (venature) si vedono molto bene sia nella mappa con i grigi,ma specialmente nella mappa in rilevo.
