Error messages

I just purchased Histwar and downloaded/installed my copy.  Unfortunately, when I try to play the game I get the following error messages:

"the direct3d device has a non-zero reference count" and "An error occurred in the device create callback function".

I have an MSI GX740 with an ATI 5870 and the latest updates for Direct X....any ideas on what may be causing the error messages?
