I have my laptop (Alienware MX17) connected to a TV via HDMI. If I launch Histwar in a window it displays on the TV but if I swap to full screen the image disappears... Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong please?

Did you set the resolution to match that of the TV?  Some TVs are very fussy & will reject anything but the preset res of the TV. 
Also some TVs have a dedicated 'PC channel' that may help.
