Temporary PBEM Breakthrough
« le: 05 juin 2010, 22:20:56 pm »
My friend Alfiere initiated a small experiment as part of our " Lets fight the same battle and compare screens".
We think that from this experiment we have arrived at a bug free way to play pbem with very few extra steps. this can only be played by Gentleman, as an element of trust is involved, you could switch sides and look at your enemies orders

1. Choose battle, swap OOB, Doctines etc.
2. First player initiates the battle in SOLO mode/Command both Sides
3. First player makes his initial deployment and orders for his side and exits game, do NOT start the game at this point.
4. First player sends his save file to player 2
5. Player 2 saves in Save/Battle and "Loads saved game", selects the side he is playing (by left click on the F2 map page), makes his deployments, saves (by exiting game) and sends back to player 1, do NOT start game at this point.
6. Player one saves in Save/Battle then "loads saved game", selects his side (by left click on the F2 map page), and plays battle giving orders etc for 15 MINS only.
7. Player one hits "pause" after 15 mins, changes side to the enemy, exits the program and sends file to player 2.
8. Player 2 Saves battle file and Launches "Watch Replay" he watches the replay just as in a pbem mode, exits, then loads saved game selects his side (by left click on the F2 map page), and fights 15 mins giving orders etc. Hit "pause" change side to the enemy, exits the program and sends file to player 1.

Remember, unlike pbem mode you will save the emailed file in Save/Battle not Save/pbem and remember to select OVERIGHT EXISTING FILE!!!
Once step 1-7 are completed, then step 8 is just repeated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Almost exactly like pbem but two extra steps, "Watch Replay" & "Change Sides" ORDER BUG FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! & NO RED SCREENS!!!!!!!

Sounds like a great idea!  Let us know how it works out.

Like Alfiere said in his other post, you aren't limited to 15 minute turns, and he suggested 30 minutes.  I've been requesting variable length turns for PBEM, and if other people are playing with longer turns if they have the chance, maybe JMM will implement it in PBEM.

Watch for dropped orders, as JMM thought those were because the game was reloaded.  This should produce quite a bit of useful information.  Good luck!

Gentlemen, this WORKS. I have ordered and counter ordered, marched in circles, supported, deployed, reassigned, defended and generally had the Corps doing everything but a Belly Dance, and they did it all
We changed turn times,10, mins, 15 mins and 25 mins, all work, but your enemy can do a lot of damage in 25 mins and you can't respond.

Let the Battles begin again!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D

To summarise:

Pros: Orders are carried out on time and with precision. No Red Screens. Battle End Screen works. Customisable Turn Time.

Cons: Player can switch sides and peak at opponents orders. Have to FF Replay to last turn (not a big deal). Have to watch the  timer for turn time'

Had another thought, I may be way off base.

If JMM can make a small fix that prevents the opponents from switching sides, maybe a password protect, we may have a very good PBEM mode with very little extra work

Thanks to some input by Ges, I have found that there are 2 workaround modes.
The first one which we are using now is more like a pbem/mp Hybrid, as you are giving your orders DURING your 15 min turn time, making it feel more like a "Real Time" MP battle.

Method 2 which was sparked off by some input about the replay from Ges, is more like the Official pbem.

Every thing is the same to set up. However step 8 becomes simpler

8. Save file, "Load Saved Game" (DO NOT watch replay), let game play for 15 mins WITHOUT giving orders, watching your & your opponents orders being carried out. "Pause" at 15 mins, Give your orders in the static mode. "unpause", Exit and send the file back.

This is more or less the Official pbem mode but with no Red Screen (YeaH!!)

Personally I prefer mode 1 because it feels less turn by turn and more "Real time".

8. Player 2 Saves battle file and Launches "Watch Replay" he watches the replay just as in a pbem mode, exits, then loads saved game selects his side (by left click on the F2 map page), and fights 15 mins giving orders in "Real Time" during his 15 mins. Hit "pause" change side to the enemy, exits the program and sends file to player 1.

There is nothing to stop a player on either side using both modes in the same battle. Whatever the mode used, we are in full swing with pbem again and all are finding it easy to get into the routine. All orders are being obeyed and remember we have no Red Screens.

Also i prefer mode 1.
Very well play PBEM so.
The orders can be give also  at the end of the time how preferred.
I hope to do well JMM PBEM almost ready, to allow another Both side(PBEM) with time setting and password to do not see the orders of the opponent so you can choose which type of PBEM play or only with time setting.

We will be testing Version 0.2. when it comes. Players will fight using the pbem they prefer, some don't like the Red Screen and like variable time for turns.  If Version0.2 works as expected I hope to use it as the preferred method. However there is an old English saying:

"A Bird in the hand is worth two in the Bush"

We have the same in French: "un tiens vaut mieux que deux tu l'auras"
