So with the gap opened, it is time to wedge into it.
Finally all my corps get to see some action!

Victor, who had been waiting in the Village, moves up, and Lefebre, from the Northwest, moves down towards the Valley. The Enemy in this sector has been severely pounded by the Grand Batterie so they are ready for some cold steel.

At the end of the day, the wedge is complete.  Right and Left are completely seperated. Just before nightfall, my boys were ready to storm up the hill en masse.
Down south, Ney, Jerome and Davout were still jostling with the Allied Left wing.

The results of this day was: Marginal Tactical, but Strong Strategic. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I didn't continue the battle for day 2, but I am sure I had an advantegous starting position.

What could have been better, is my timing. My corps were too far from my Grande Batterie. My attack on the Allied's right flank could have, and should have been engaged 1-2 hours earlier - I believe I could have ended the day on a more decisive note. However, I normally don't play with the historical order delay, so this was something to get used to ;)

General, what a brilliant tactic, you split him in two.  I think we both agree that the attack on the center is right for the topography of this battlefield.
I agree totally that timing is everything. In my first attempt I attacked at least an hour too early, in my second attempt I was more patient and got it right. Your timing was perfect. We should do a different scenario asap.

Alfiere, Diversion is a tease.  It is a probe without commitment but the enemy doesn't know that and may commit his reserves to support, so drawing them away from the area where your true attack is to happen. If nothing else it pins him down without commiting you force to a full attack.

In summary of my posted battles at Montebello. At the moment Grand Tactical AI cannot change it's plan after the battle has begun, when JMM does something about this (I know it's on his list), SOLO mode battles will be even more challenging.

I however, although I enjoy solo now and again, will remain a commited pbem/MP player.  You can't beat the unpredicability of the thought process of a human being. After all Generals of the period were humans not computers. ;)

OK, this looks like fun.

Here is my setup.

Initial plan is to defend along my left flank and center, divert on my right.   Then see how things develop, but probably try to attack up the center.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

...and here is the situation by late morning...

My diversion on the right ran into a serious enemy advance.  For a while I thought I might lose much of my artillery that I had put dangerously far out front, but the artillery was able to get into action before they were overrun.

Something I've noticed in some of the other screenshots...it looks like part of the coalition force is getting stuck in the deep woods on the maps lower right.  This would appear to put the coalition at a disadvantage since part of their force is out of the action.

And here is the map at the end:

The ending analysis:

I was able to push in the enemy's left flank, but mainly because he had a corps stuck in the deep forest there.  That seems to be a glitch.  Then I attacked in the center and was able to take some ground.

The two French artillery units at the top of the map (belonging to Lefebvre) got stuck up there and would not move with the corps when it advanced, nor would they respond to individual unit commands.

On my right flank, it was very hard to carry an attack forward as the deploy orders kept getting cancelled or truncated, such that instead of deploying where I drew the line behind the enemy, the deploy line would be moved back to where the corps currently was located.  Or else the order would just be ignored.  Not sure if this is a bug or just part of the AI.

Great to see you joining in the fun Ges, my worthy pbem opponent. We often waste too much of our energy on this Forum concentrating on the technical aspects of HLG and not enough time actually fighting battles etc...

Dear all who have posted

I'm still inexperienced, so could you please answer the following questions:

1) Did you change any unit assignments during the setup phase?

2) Where did you change the Corps locations during the setup phase?

3) Which units did you detach for scouting in the beginning and where?

4) How do you calculate the line frontage when you give the orders "Defend in line" or "Deploy in line"?

Thanks a lot!

Regards,
António

Dear Marques,

this topic is meant for others to learn from, so here you go:

Citer
1) Did you change any unit assignments during the setup phase?

Yes. To create a Grande Batterie, I took 90 guns and placed them all under Mortier. No extra cavalry or infantry under him. The idea was to have Grouchy's calvary in support to fend off and chase down any enemies trying to approach and destroy my Grand Batterie.

Citer
2) Where did you change the Corps locations during the setup phase?

I put Victor's Corps close to the Village, to send him to occupy it just after the battle started. I had Grouchy and Murat in the rear of my Grande Batterie and Ney + Lefebre as my left.

Citer
3) Which units did you detach for scouting in the beginning and where?

I didn't, but I suppose Hussars would do nicely for this role.

Citer
4) How do you calculate the line frontage when you give the orders "Defend in line" or "Deploy in line"?

I am still inexperienced in that one, really. I do it on "gut feeling", it's always the same what I do and maybe I should experiment with it more.
