I kindly ask an opinion on which is the better way to verify if an enemy unit is under the fire range of a deployed artillery unit. At the moment I think the only way is to measure the distance between the artillery and enemy unit using the 2d map

Thanks to all,
Andrea

I think that this is in the list for the future improvements of the game. Indeed it will be a nice tool fo micro management.
Same thing for the range of vision of the CC: somtimes it is hard to know if the absence of enemy units is due to the fact that there are none or if this is simply because they are out of range.

Again a doubt about artillery management...
I have an artillery unit deployed in defense and firing, the "fire" order given by AI, so how can I stop the artillery firing? Maybe I have to detach the unit in order to make it stop firing?

I ask an opinion about the following thought:
I think it would be useful to make the gun hits more evident, artillery firing is clearly visible becouse of the smoke effect (great work by JMM in my opinion, I love the way it is rendered), in the same way I would like to see where the cannon balls are hitting. I know the cannon balls hits are not explosions, so maybe it is historically correct to have a moderate visible effect,
I must search some information about it

thanks to all,
Andrea

But... normaly you can see very well the cannon balls flying and hitting the ground in front of the targetted units. May be you have a problem with the resolution.

Ok,

again concerning artillery fire I've noticed a strange behaviour :
I had my artillery deployed in defense under AI control, my unit started firing but the nearest enemy unit was at least 5000 metres far, the scenario was Friedland
please JMM could you explain me how to stop artillery firing?

thanks a lot

Could you send me the xxx.sav file to technique@histwargames.com
ART can open the fire if, and only if there is a target...
Moreover, when you send an order "Attack to target", the ART unit moves before stopping at the good range in order to open the fire.

Citer

Did you check the FOW options you had, it can "appear" that arty is firing on a target a long way away, when it is in fact much closer, but the FOW latest position has not been updated, when it has been it will be shown to be in range - that is only a suggestion at what might have happened.

I have played a huge amount of games (MP and solo) and never seen arty open fire at 5000 metres - yet.

Hmmm, what I thought could be the reason would not be then.....so I don't know what happened here, has it happened again in any of your games ?.

I think no, I noticed the strange behaviour becouse the enemy troops were at their starting position and mine too,
so no unit engaged in combat. I played Austerlitz and Montebello scenarios more times and never noticed a similar
artillery behaviour, I also must say that I never examined when my artillery started firing in order to verify the enemy
distance, but I can say that in my past battles I had artillery firing with enemy unit "visible" from my position

The problem is the defensive AI makes a mistake.. and 3 Russian regiments are deployed on bad sectors from West to East (length of defensive line is the length of the map itself...)

Very curious.. but it's not a problem with the range of artillery.
I'll try to identify this exceptional bug (never seen before)
