Titre: NAPOLEONIC SEELOWEE, Any help ?
Posté par: oster1815 le 22 octobre 2011, 16:40:03 pm
After reading a very interesting and comprehensive book about the abortive Hitler's Seelowee opération in summer 1940, I'm looking for something similar about the planned Napoleonic's  invasion of the British Isles.
I just found some documents about the dispositions of the French Army d'Angleterre in Boulogne and around, short descriptions of the transport and landing fleet and general considerations about the strategic moves . I found nothing about the planned landing and the operations if it was successful...What about the political considerations and the fate of the civilians for instance  ?
Also, I have nothing valuable  about the defense of the coast,   planned resistance behind  and what forces will be available to counter-attack.
So, if you know of some book dealing with - or if you're interested- this may be a basis for some "alternative History".... ;)
Thanks for help,
_____________
Merci d'avance

If Pavel I was not murdered, Russia fights against England side by side with France.

It's always the same problem with Russian diplomacy,  one cask  of  vodka  saturday night and sunday morning the world explodes

But Mind you, my questions were serious...up to little transformations to Nix Isbas in Yorkshire cottages and a Norman chapel ....  ;)

The Kent coast was well protected both by geography and military engineering.  The chalk cliffs limit the landing points.   Any landing would need a port for the supply chain.   Dover was well protected both by the ancient castle and the modern works now called the Western Heights.

The easiest landing point would have been the Romney Marsh and Dungeness point.  These were protected by Martello Towers and in 1804 construction started on the Royal Military Canal creating an artificial river (completed 1809).

One British concern was the potential for a landing in the Thames estuary, either the Kent or Essex side.  The 1809 expedition to take Walcheren (Flushing) was intended to remove this as a bas for an invasion force.

Thank you for this infos.
Do you have some datas about the manpower available for defense  ( regulars and reserve/militias ) in case of the landing successful in 1804/1805 ?
I'm very confused by units  called Yeomanry, Fencibles or "private armies"  levied by some aristocrats...
Actually, I found some units in 1940 with this lineage back to the Armada time  :!:

With the Peninsular British rgts and 1805 French, we can now have a battle of Brighton  ;)

Probably as good as any other place to win or die

Otherwise, St Tropez is more attractive but on the wrong sea ...  ;)

They still serve in Russian army, i think they don't like europeans so much, so we can use their for punitive actions in future european wars. ;)

They look like WWII security with maybe a Komissar in front ...

Otherwise, I just wanted to tell you I watched on TV the opening of the new Bolchoï in Moskow and found it really splendid with a touch of " GRANDEUR"   and tradition ....Too bad it's so far and I'm so tired : this, the History museum, Borodino and maybe Petersbourg are all in my dreams....
Keep the good work going  ;)

I  just read something interesting about Caesar's landings....It looks he choose also Romney area  and landed four legions with auxiliaries, horses and war machines - about equivalent to 30.000 men cargo. A  good achievement , even without naval opposition !
Also, I'd no idea of a plan of invasion in 1809...By this time, Napo had probably his hands full of Spain, Portugal, Sicily etc... and no fleet to match the Royal Navy;   were the British  really concerned or they used this as an argument to take a bridgehead on the Continent ?

Hello Jacquinot,
A long time I didn't hear from you - Are you still digging in Borodino to find the Gold Eagle ?

I send you a link from a young fellow who is trying to create an Histwar team for this game . Maybe you'ld be interested....You can also join him as  "general Guillaume"...
I'ld try also to make something about Genealogy. I guess from above you have a lot to tell, if you wish...I'll let you know when ready.
