The miltary march comes from the Aria of the "tambour major".

Today Sambre et Meuse.
Sambre et Meuse was composed by rober plaquette (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Planquette) and Paul Cezano. arranged into a military march by Joseph Francois Rauski (1879).
This march is one of the most famous french march also played by other coutries.
The storie:
In 1792, the armies of the Revolution, largely composed of volunteers, went to Belgium to fight the armies of united Europe, whose objective was to restore by force the old regime. The invasion of the territory of the young French nation was able to be stopped at Valmy, September 20, 1792. The song also takes a proclamation made in 1796 by General Bonaparte, then commander in chief of the army of Italy, which honors soldiers by still famous words: "Naked, malnourished, you do not have shoes or clothes, or shirts, almost no bread and our stores are empty. Those of the enemy full of all, it's up to you to conquer. you want it, you can, leave! "
(google translation).
the lyrics:
All these proud children of Gaule
Went without truce and rest,
With their rifles on the shoulder.
Courage in the heart and back bag,
Glory was their food.
They were without bread, without shoes
There, they slept on the hard one
With their bags like pillows.
Chorus:
The regiment of Sambre and Meuse
Always went to the cry of "Freedom",
Seeking the glorious road
Who led to immortality.
To beat us, they were a hundred and thousand;
At their head, they had kings.
The General, weak old man,
Weakens for the first time.
Indicator certain the defeat,
It brings together all its soldiers.
Then it made beat the retirement
But they did not listen to it.
Repeat Chorus
The shock was similar to the lightning.
It was a combat of giant.
Drunk of glory, drunk of powder,
To die they tightened the rows.
The regiment by the grapeshot
Was attacked of everywhere.
However alive wall,
Impassive, remained upright.
Repeat Chorus
The number was right of courage.
A soldier remained, the last.
It was defended with rage,
But soon prisoner was made.
By seeing this savage hero,
The enemy cried over his fate.
The hero took a cartridge,
The Jura, then gave itself death.
Chorus:
The regiment of Sambre and Meuse,
Receipt death with the cry of "Freedom",
But its glorious history
He give right to immortality.
It isone of the march of West Point University and the Ohio State University.

Thanks Bibouba,
Always very interesting : I never heard before of Allier...
Usually I like old German ( 18th ) marchs, but those guys parading for Pinochet are too much for me
Also, there are some very good old British ( and Scots ) music- I think I have old 33 records somewhere :?:
How advance the Spanish patch ?
Bon Courage

Bibouba and Darsh,
On the same link in YouTUBE there is the 18th c. " Kingdom of Prussia anthem " . To my surprise it is almost " God save the King" !!!
Also, there are many Preussisch marchs , including two versions of "HohenFriedberg marsch" attribued to Fredericus himself. :!:
One is a very slow parade march named "Marsh der Dragoner Bayreuth/Anspach Rgt " and the second is the most known and faster infantry march.
There are some very good "native" german interpretations- no need to enlist dubious exotics bands ;)
Anyway this link on the Military Musics if full of rare findings, including very good Great Britain traditionnal marchs.
THanks again,
Oster

A version of god save the queen has been also used as the russian imperial anthem.

here it's the version of the russian national anthem (with god save the king) :

Thanks again Bibouba,
There are so many amazing titles, that it'ld be necessary to spend full days to find all ....
I discovered some other French Louis XIV, Louis XV music -some from Lully, like the " Marche des Mousquetaires Noirs". All these march are very slow by comparison with later...
I'll have 2 or 3 days very busy with workers at home, so less Histwar for a time ;)

Ps n'en profite pas pour délaisser l a Péninsule :!:

today is the march of the militay school of Saint-Cyr:
http://www.goear.com/listen/24b9c87/saint-cyr-
Song of Triumph of the promotion of Isly -1843/1845- written by the student BOUISSET Leon (1824-1900) to the tune of the "March of the Puritans" from the opera by Bellini.
This hymn has become the traditional song of Saint-Cyr.
in 1845 it was decided not to distinguish between students misclassified, carrying a blue shoulder without fringe (the cake), and good students who qualified for the red-fringed epaulets. The opportunity was too good to challenge the decision by a song.

(history of the school)
Lyrics (google traduction):
Noble cake that your name
Is immortal in our history,
It is ennobled by the glory
In a valiant promotion.
And if in the future
your name is forthcoming,
It may join
our great memory,
It will be said at Saint-Cyr
when you appeared so beautiful
Promoting new
come to bury you.
You who always our misfortunes
Was a constant companion
You alas, we lost!
Receive the tribute of our tears.
We will make a coffin
Which will be filed
Your sacred remains
We will take your grief,
And if one of us
Comes to offer himself as a token
The officer in tribute
Bow the knee!
Friends we must meet
Around the Holy Galette
And as ever in this forum
Reign his noble memory!
His name Almighty
If he comes one day alarm
A five hundred brothers in arms
Serve as a rallying
On the day of the conquest
In the absence of standard
We la Galette
To fix our gaze.
Is the breath of misfortune
Rages over our heads
Either on African soil
We would die for honor!
Heaven is a pure
Shiny on our heads
And away from storm
Our days are all azure
Yes you will still
O sacred Galette
Revered the mother
The shoulder of gold!

Long time that I didn't post a new french march .
This is one of my favourite :
" Salut au 85eme " from the composer Fernand Petit, director of the 85th regiment (composed in 1904). This a two steps polka.

Some good interpretations:

This march is often played during the July 14th Parade.

Magnifiques videos, certaines comme la fin du dernier carré à Waterloo, émouvantes.
