Here are screen shots from Histwar demo 2 of a French infantry regiment of 2100 men (in 3 battalions) in each of the possible formations (all to the same scale) they are compared to a cavalry regiment deployed in line and a 6 gun artillery battery. A ground scale is attached, worked out using the distance tool (F9) so the frontages of the formations can be compared...

low res http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/view.php?id=1711911&da=y
There is also a comparison of the deployment of 3 regiments of different size, all in division column formation ( the one which gives volley before charging):

This shows that the frontages for this deployment are very similar irrespective of the large difference in manpower (1680,2100 and 2850 men)

That's a false positive. The file is ok.

A frontage of a battalion varies with the formation (around 130 meters in line, 80 column of division, 30 column of platoon)
The difference is the proof depth.. not the frontage! It's a basic rule.

See this very interesting link (in french ...) also posted in Genadiers forum :

I agree with JMM's comment above: In the second pair of photos i was just trying to point out that the three different regiments ( a small one of 1680 men in 2 battalions, the medium one of 2100 men in 3 battalions and the larger one of 2850 men in 5 battalions) when adopting the division column formation in the game, all present a similar frontage (as they must since they present two battalions at the front and those battalions are in the same formation).
-
So the rule of thumb is 'allow 200m/front line regiment'? 8 regiments with 50% reserve => 800m deployment?
-
In the game, the limit is 2 battalions in front, other ones are in reserve.

"So the rule of thumb is 'allow 200m/front line regiment'?"
Yes - though I seem to remember the manual suggests about 300m in the discussion of the deploy on line order. This would allow all the infantry to adopt line formation without overlapping.
note added later: see pg 69 of manual bk1 chapter 4....
