Titre: Release deadline already missed. What is the new deadline?
Posté par: Cpl Steiner le 28 décembre 2009, 01:42:04 am
Hi JMM,

on 07/11/09, you posted a number of deadlines for the game in the news section:

http://www.histwar.com/news/deadlines-for-histwar.html

The release date deadline was quoted as "Before Christmas". Well as Christmas 2009 has been and gone, I guess you meant Christmas 2010! ;)

Seriously though, this deadline needs to be revised and a new one posted in the news section.

Seriously it will be done when JMM says it is done and when he feels all the bugs that he can fix are done.

I mean we have a demo and soon to have a second one at least we have something to play so that is good enough, but seriously  8)

Sorry to disagree but a deadline should mean something or you may as well not make them. JMM said it would be done "before Christmas". It wasn't.

Sometimes being "nice" to someone isn't always the best thing for them. As I recall, the breakdown of the deal with <company name deleted> was due to JMM consistently giving over-optimistic release dates he couldn't actually meet.

We now have lots of people with pre-orders placed waiting for the game, so "when JMM says it's done" is not exactly fair to them is it?

Bonjour Messieurs,

Simmer down, simmer down  .... my money is on the table too  ;) ....

There are a lot of game production details to attend to, not to mention snapping last minute source code bugs (which are complicated enough)  ....  and JMM is doing it all by himself ....

So, crack another cold-one, sit back, relax and enjoy the BCS Bowl Games ....  :)

I like your attitude, Duke. We've all been waiting, but with all the progress in the last thirty days, I for one can wait a bit longer. We have the demo, and there is a lot to digest in that.

Having a brief statement on where we stand currently isn't a bad idea at all.  Particularly for those of us with short vacations ;).

Actually, it had nothing to do with that.  The fact that we've got a demo in our hands and a shipping date for the box version in January should make that obvious.  I'm too close to the source to do any open speculation, but I'm sure you could figure out another reason without any hints.  It wasn't release dates, and it wasn't that the game wasn't close to being finished enough to release. As for anything else, "I can neither confirm nor deny..."

So what's your pre-order number? :D   Mine is 22.  It would have been lower if I hadn't been on the phone with my bank at the time finding how how they handle a transaction in Euros.  And a hint:  JMM might be good to those who support him if what I read on the French forum is correct.  How good I do not know.

So what's your pre-order number? :D   Mine is 22.

I haven't pre-ordered, I'm just thinking of all those who have. As I was only intending to get the digital download version I didn't see the point in pre-ordering. It won't help JMM much and I won't get it any quicker.

And a hint:  JMM might be good to those who support him if what I read on the French forum is correct.  How good I do not know.

From what I gather, pre-orderers are kind of a self-nominated beta-testing team who might get to see a pre-release copy of the game before anyone else. If so, good luck to them but it's the final release version I'm interested in.

Ok, just keep in mind that this isn't the typical commercial game release where the publisher shoves it out the door unfinished and pays the developers for 2 patches before moving on to something else and the game gets abandoned, finished or not.

JMM will be around for quite a while patching and enhancing.  The *final release* version might be around the bicentennial of Waterloo in 2015.  It's up to you if you want to play sooner.  I don't want to wait that long.

We'll have a very nice playable version 1.0 some time in January according to the current schedule.  Opening pre-orders kind of locks in that date.  It won't contain British troops, for example, and it's sure to contain bugs, but both of those will be fixed soon enough.  It probably won't be as polished as a highly funded commercial release, but that will improve over time.

If that's not good enough, well... let me know if you find any other good Napoleonic battlefield simulations (not games) so I can buy those too.

Work is in progress, we got a demo and an constantly answering JMM,

I´m happy with that, Pre Order Number 33 btw.

Even after the release we will get a game that is growning stronger day by day.

JMM had the chance of a nice mass testing ny the demo. Its normal that new questions arise with it.

I´m pretty sure you will see, soon you will play the full version.

The only things I am expecting now after pre-ordering LG are the ones explicitly stated with the pre-order:
- Access to the "Grenadiers" sub-forum (where the doctrine editor is available)
- Box shipping in january 2010.

From my PreOrder Confirmation email:

"Les Grognards Collector Napoleon will be shipped in January 2010. However, once the game is available, you will be able to download and start playing "HistWar: Les Grognards"! "

I got to be #11 and I have a pretty clear timetable for the main release and even, apparently, a demo v.2 coming up.  I'm happy.

I have pre-ordered & don't mind having a bit of a wait, I don't even mind the inevitable bugs that are in pretty much every software release (I use Windows OS as the benchmark for bugs  :p )  The demo shows a few but nowhere near as many as some games I've seen.  I've waded thru enuf code to know it's a long job tracking these things down & some appear in the most unlikely ways.

I am happy to learn the ropes of the game from the demo for now & there is plenty of reading in the manuals released so far to keep me busy.
It is tantalising/frustrating to have release dates come & go, but JMM is pretty busy I think, just the idea of trying to answer all the questions here in multiple languages is a full-time job I think.  That has to impact his debugging time.

Personally I hope pre-ordering shows JMM he's not wasting his time with a tiny fickle customer base, & that the 'other companies' who failed to keep faith are the losers here.

I have preordered as well and the funny part the only one complaining is someone who hasn't put any money down for the game.

I think before you complain you should see that those who have preorder the game and are allowed in the grenadier forum understand that JMM is making good progress and coming out with a second demo.

So preorder the game and join the ranks of the grenadiers as I have been waiting 5 years for the game I am ready whenever it is ready by JMM

I am happy to wait for the finished game, JMM is rushed enough as it is and I'm sure he is doing his best. We have the demo and this is good enough to keep me going and to familiarise myself with the basics. Demo 2 will soon be available for those that pre ordered and this will help to tide me over.

Bonjour Cpl Steiner,

Don't worry .... Personal experience: same thing happened to me on my pre-order (slightly different payment error, not so many words)   ....

So, I tried again and this time I used a credit card (Mastercard), instead of a debit card (Visa), and ....  voila! .... It was accepted

I don't know what ATOS is .... but I do know of other Grenadiers here who also had to submit multiple pre-orders because of 'payment error' rejections .... ;)

Seems like the credit markets are really not so good at lending after all!

Also ... you maybe can find some help in the HistWar Les Grognards : Pre-order thread ....  :)

I don't know what ATOS is ...

ATOS verifies credit card purchases.  An API error would indicate it got information in a format it didn't expect.  If I saw that on my transaction, I'd assume it was because I was trying to purchase something in Euros instead of the local currency which is dollars here.  I'd already verified with my bank that the credit card would accept a transaction in Euros and charge a nominal fee (about 3%) for the conversion.  I didn't ask if the transaction would work on my debit card as well.

If that's not it, I have no idea.  Perhaps Perrine would have more information.

Edit:  It looks like she did. :)

I don't understand why to pre-order. Is it less cost? Quicker? Higher version?

Pre-ordering really does not help the purchaser. I pre-ordered to give JMM some income based on my faith that he is doing is best to deliver an innovative game that is aimed at what I want. I am supporting an independednt game designer and maybe even helping him to finish things. It gives him some cash but also lets JMM know that people have faith in him and what he is trying to do.

Lets be brutally honest here, if LG does not get over the line we are unlikely to see anyone else try to develop a similar game within the next 20 years. None of the mainstream game developers won't. Any little thing I can do to help ensure its success is a small price to pay. I have blown a good deal of money on mainstream games that failed to deliver, I see a tiny amount of risk in placing some cash on JMM as an excellent thing to do. Good for him and good for us as a gaming community.

But,... returning to the deadline, if I am not mistaken, after a game goes "gold", some time is needed to make the CD's, print covers, manuals, etc, box the all thing and then prepare to ship. In past instances that I followed, this was at least a couple (2-4 + ?) weeks. So... I would think that if the January 2010 shipping deadline is to be followed, the "machin" must be considered finalized until the end of the current December month..., bugs or no bugs  8)
(and there are always going to exist bugs, probably lots of them, no matter how long it gets delayed  ;))

By the way, I still think that sales tax calculation is wrong. I work for a big retail company that ships all over the world and whenever the customer is in a different country they get charged sales tax at their own country's rate. For HW:LG I am being charged the French rate of 19.6% rather than my own UK rate of 15%. It might only be worth a few pound but as my own company doesn't do it that way I'm just wondering if it's correct.

There are 2 ways...
a) we use French rate of 19.6% for all countries in Europe... (VAT varies from 15% to 25%)
b) we use the rate of each country.. the management for this kind of process is very complex.. and we'll have to increase the price for this task.

You can believe me, I think it's the best way we chose.

Electronic trade have specifics rules for countries within the EU. The VAT rate that must be applied is the one that belongs to the country where the saler is registered. So if Histwar games is registered in France, French VAT must be applied for all customers within the EU.

Wow, I see the race is on between Les Grognards and Napoleon, Total War.
Of course at least with HistWar: Les Grognards we have the Demo version to
play about with. But of course the modders on the Empire: Total War forum
will say they already have a workable Napoleon, Total War using the Empire:
Total War engine and theirs a number of good demo's on Youtube to prove it.

With Sega and the development guys from Creative Assembly already going for
February 22nd 2010 for the release of Napoleon, Total War, its going to be a
toss up as to which completed game arrives first.

MAHAHAHAHA!  ;) Oh, that is too funny and it will take more than a Youtube video or two to prove it to me. The game mechanics of the Total War series make it impossible to create e serious wargame using their system. Many may consider them fun games but they have never been a true wargame that tries to effectively simulate actual battle.

TW:E or N really are very different games to HW:LG and in most cases will appeal to a different audience IMHO. I do not think that the release of TW:N will impact upon LG sales in any detrimental manner.

The only company putting out real time wargames besides JMM is Panther games which do WW2 wargames. They have an AI that is fully functional as an opponent and as lower echelon commnaders for you. The programmer who was redoing Horse and Musket for Matrix games ( good game I'm a beta tester ) was going to do an updated version of " battles of Napoleon, but it didn't pan out.

Damn...you were a few seconds early ...
The Total war idea worked well with Rome as well I think...as long as it all concludes in a massive melee combat the idea is fine...
but starting with the 17th century it all changes and the latest TWs are just graphical showdowns... that's about it

I'll stick to realism and will stay my ground to the last

Best analogy I've ever come up with:

Ever see "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"?

Remember the game Caracticus Potts' father is playing on the floor with his old brigadier?  The one where they roll a disk at the opponent's soldiers to knock them down...and then shout a lot...and probably drink (though off camera to preserve the G rating)?

Seems like immense fun, if daft, ahistorical, and silly.

That, to me, is everything TW.

I believe there isn't any competition between this 2 games because the other game isn't a wargame.
Austerlitz on 4 Km˛ and 20 regiments.. No sure it's Austerlitz.. I am waiting for the squares destroyed by CAV and a lot of unhistorical behaviours.

BTW, I can promise the release will be before February... and the DemoII for Les Grenadiers with a new battle AND Austerlitz very soon!

JMM

Oh, JMM, my impatience is growing by the minute... When, oh, when, will it see the light of day? :(

As nobody more informed has yet answered...(and I got that email...)
Yep something about that, just the information about the progress, the demo, which has to be tested to be bug free and the release of the full game... so no worries

For me, "very soon" is in the next 5 seconds.

He's already said it will be before February.  I think I'd go with that date if I were making any plans.
