Maybe a problem for the option within a English file...
First step : Don't modify the options  ;)

This solved my problem with *Client stopped working':

1. Find the file initdiag.txt under HistWar\Langage\1 (0 = French and 1 = English)
2. Change the resolution in line 6 (Width) and 7 (High) to your actual screen resolution.

I use TripleHead2Go, so I had to change this to 3840 and 1024.

Can't run the game in any resolution higher than 1440x900 despite the handy tips from MHLarsen. I've changed both initidiags to 1920x1080 but no joy...

I get to the options screen ok, and then select a scenario, it seems to fail when loading the next splash screen. I can tell when it's going to work because the arrow cursor changes to the square one andd I get the splash screen up.

I do have 2 displays one with a maximum resolution of 1440x900 so I might disable the 2nd and see what happens.

Spyboard.txt sent to histwar@histwar.com

*Update* No joy, still won't work at any resolution above 1440x900 with only one monitor

The game got frozen twice when I hit the map edges.I had to restart the comp after waiting a few minutes.

I also had this happen twice. (XP, Nvidia card)
There is also a graphic (looks like a seam of wheat field) which builds when you get close to the map edges which is a fps killer.

Dont Know if it is a bug or not, but I cant get time to pass in the game. I give all my orders and when i press "W" or click on the "Chargez" buton everything stays as it was and the clock stays stucked in 10:00, units stay quiet French and Austrians.
I can pause and un-pause and I can also increase and decrease the time rate but with no result. Everything else seems to be working ok.
I havent seen nobody reporting this yet, so maybe I'm missing something.

Thanks in advance

This happened to me too once. I had to quit the game (the application, not just the battle) and restart and then it worked again, but there is obviously some bug that can occur at times.

I'm getting the game freezing when I go near the edge of the map, as I believe someone else reported. Right before it happens there is a lot of lag and if you go too close to the edge it freezes and you have to ctrl-alt-del to get out of it.

I made a couple of tests today as I also have the occasional CTD. I recognized that it doesnt matter if I change the options. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt no matter what options are set. But then I noticed one little detail.
I always have CTD when theres the background pictures of the charging guards. HW always works for me when theres the background pictues with the charging Hussar. So I started HW for maybe 1/2 hour without changing options snd it always works with Hussar picture and it doesnt work with guard picture. Maybe others could look into this also.

The disappearing units bug just happened to me again. My Chasseurs de cheval where closing in on the enemy artillery which fired once and my chasseurs where gone. They don't show up on the 2d or 3d maps but I can still give them orders from the unit card under the commander, and the order arrows show up where the unit should be, but it is nowhere to be seen. And just now it happaned to an infantry regiment - Enemy arty fires once, some casualties fall to the ground and the entire regiment disappears but is still available for order form the unit card. Smomething is not right here. :(

Ok I have mainly 3 Bugs i think:

1. Crashing while using the camera, especially when close to the maps ends. (several crashes)

2. Units just disappear when they get fire from the enemy.

and

3. minor graphics bugs like sliding troops or all the regiment is one big brawl, also having bavariens inside of a russian regiment and shooting at the second line.Well but i think that is graphics only cause the outcome seems to be ok.

Can anybodys say if they are already fixed in the real game?

All in all the battles go well.

We need to get used to troops with theire own opinion about what to do ;) lol

Had no noticeable issues playing thru the tutorial levels.  When I went to menu & clicked 'exit' the monitor stayed in sync but was black & the system would only respond to a hard reset.
Loaded the Montebello map & using/clicking on the strategy map was OK but as soon as I switched to 3d the game dropped to a black screen within 3 seconds - again hard reset req'd.

Using W7 x64 & nvda drivers 195.62
The default font is pretty hard on the eyes but I hear there is a way to change it - otherwise I've really enjoyed the demo so far.

Specs:
Win XP SP2
Intel Core2Duo E7400

Directx 9.0c

this happens either with default graphics, or with forced antialiasing and anisotropic filtering

The two previous freezes I reported I suspect are the same bug as in this post so I removed them.

I also get the freeze when I move the camera and it reaches the edge of the map. The first two times I could alt-tab to the desktop and quit the game from there, but when it happened again just now I couldn't even alt-tab out of the game but had to reboot the computer. :( This doesn't always happen, and so far it has only happened when I have had the game going at 06/60 speed.

Win XP SP2
Intel Core2Duo 6400
2 Gig DDR2 RAM
NVidia GeForce 7950GT, 195.62 version drivers

C:\Program Files (x86)\HistWar\HistWar La Demo\Save\Bataille

and..

Both folders have files in but none for the correct date and time. I think it only creates a save if it gets passed the CTD.

Yes, I used the Montebello OoB for both armies and the Montebello map. Sounds like a Windows 7 security issue to me but it's strange that if I keep launching the game and doing exactly as before I eventually get passed the bug. The background splash screen that shows once I get passed the bug is always the Hussar, never the other one.

My user account (Jon) is an Admin account as far as I know because it's the first account I set up after installing Windows 7. Several times during my testing this evening I have deployed my forces and given the initial orders, but when I press W to start the battle nothing happens. The time counter is showing but it does not progress. I try giving new orders pressing W, R, T a few times but nothing. After a 3 hour battle (Montebello map and armies) in which I finally managed to break the French and drive them towards their rear the game freezes (at 7.11 o' clock so I'm guessing the battle is about to end) and I get no end game stats or anything. I have to alt-tab to desktop and quit the game from there. Quite annoying after spending so much time with an interesting battle. :(

I've got one dollar (Euro conversion optional) that says you were in the 3D view near the village watching the attack there when this happened.  If you get too close to the map edge there, the game freezes.  Known bug.

I was actually in the 2D view when it happened, that's what's strange. I only seem to get these freezes when I'm at 06/60 speed (which I was this time too). But maybe that's a coincidence.

Just for the record, last night the game loaded very fast (making me think that something had been retained in RAM) and locked up almost at once, requiring a hard reset. After the reboot I ran it again and it locked up again, once more requiring a reset. The third time it ran perfectly.

I think that both crashes occurred when the cursor was on the edge of the 2D map ( I was trying to find the wagons mentioned in the Line of Operation thread I started a little while ago). On the third try, I moved around the centre of the map flicking between 2D and 3D before venturing to the edge (where the wagons were waiting - loved the silhouettes of the pack-horses in the distance, by the way.)  I am not bothered that a demo crashes but it worries me that my PC locks up and I cannot even use ctrl-alt-del but must power it off.

These are the first crashes I have had with the demo.

There is some behavior that I'm seeing fairly consistently that seems like it needs tweaking.  Sometimes units seem to "fixate" on an enemy.  I've had units march across the map to continue an attack, regardless of their low morale or lack of nearby friendly forces.  See the attached picture for the last instance of this behavior.  A light infantry unit engaged some enemy infantry.  The enemy broke, and my unit followed, but was buffered by 2 enemy artillery units, and the entire enemy force lay directly ahead.  All of my main force remained far behind.

I can provide a file, if I can be told which one it may be and where I can find it.

Had a new expirience in 3d mode

I had an machinegun artillery. One single canonen fired like a machingun for several minutes playtime.

Strange. But it did not more damage then normal... so sound or graphics bug of minor importance i think.

JMM, I am still having this problem running under Windows 7 as well. I just checked my SpyBoard.txt file and it hasn't been modified since 30/12/09 even though I just ran the game today (04/01/10). Here are its properties:

Created: ‎30 ‎December ‎2009, ‏‎17:33:47
Modified: ‎30 ‎December ‎2009, ‏‎17:37:10
Accessed: 30 ‎December ‎2009, ‏‎17:33:47

I therefore think you need to be careful about reading anything into the SpyBoard.txt file people send you without checking it has actually been written to.

I think the file security system used in Windows 7 must be the reason for the problem but I can't pin down what needs to be changed.

To clarify, my game runs fine when the "Hussar" splash-screen appears but fails with the "Client has stopped working" message when the other splash-screen appears.

[EDIT]

OK JMM, I found where my SpyBoard.txt file was being written to. It's in C:\Users\<myname>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\HistWar\HistWar La Demo\Tracking.

Aside from the usual crash on the non-Hussar loading screen, I've had several random crashes with no warning, and no error box. I'll be playing, generally giving the enemy a jolly good thrashing, when all of a sudden the game will just shut off and bring me to my desktop. I don't know very much about computers, but I can tell you I'm running Windows 7 on one of these:http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01777301&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01777301&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN)

Hey All,

Good to be aboard.

(1) The Demo crashes almost immediately. The opening screen comes up, holds for a minute or two, then vanishes, leaving me back at the desktop.
(2) Was the Demo supposed to install a start icon on the desktop or not?

My computer may be the problem. Here are the specs -

Dell 2350 series
Win XP w/ Service pack 3
Pentium 4 processor
1.2 Gigs ram
10 Gigs free space
built-in vid card from Dell (unfortunately), not aftermarket

Has run several other high-vid games like Warhammer 40,000 and the Take Command Series very well.

Look forward to hearing back.

Built in video cards do not work well with LG, unless they are in a new computer, even then you get trouble.  I bought a Nvidia GE force 8400 GS from my local Staples store for $70.  It works perfectly.  There has been a lot of discussion on the board about cards, the general consensus seems to be, stay away from ATI.  You also need to download the latest version of Microsoft DirectX, 9.0c at the minimum.  Hope this helps, let me know.

P.S. when you've installed the new card, go straight to Nvidia's website and update your drivers.

Roger that. I figured as much. My comp is fairly old but there are still ATI Radeon cards out there that will work. Will hunt one down on EBay (did that once before) and install it. Don't have much choice. There isn't an Nvidia card that works for my machine. Tried that awhile back also. Am running the latest DirectX right now. Will get back after installing the new card.

Jack, be carefull with the Radeon cards, I bought  a Diamond Stealth and all the soldiers were black.  I presume you have a PCI slot on your Dell, the Nvidia I mentioned is a PCI card.  I have a Dell dimension 3000.  If you go to Dell's website and put in your tag #, Dell have video cards that fit your machine.  I did that, saw it was  a PCI, then bought my own.  Forgot to say it's  a 512mb, don't go for less.

Jack,

Are you trying Demo 1 or Demo 2 ?

Demo 2 is much more stable. Crashes are quite rare in comparison.

The game is due for release Today  :D also new Demo (version 3) if I understand correctly.

Also wondered if you might be able to increase your RAM?

I'm not a that great with PC's. Just a suggestion.

Not necessarily - I have onboard graphics (Dell running XP) and Vista on Toshiba laptop.  The Dell gives a patchwork effect for the ground otherwise it seems OK.  The Toshiba is fine.

I think I miss out on some of the detail but the game works.

Unfortunately, Jacks PC and graphics card are very old.  His game not launching , is a Direct 3D error, due to the card not having the ability to launch the game.  It won't matter whether it's Demo2 or the full game itself.  My Dell 3000 had the same problem and it was a newer PC than Jacks, fortunately mine had a PCI expansion slot. Jacks is so old he doesn't even have a means to add a new card.  His Pentium 4 and 1.2 G of RAM are fine, I am using the same processor and 1.0 G of RAM, difference is the Nvidia 512 mb card.

Sorry Jack, a new computer will be the way to go.  Don't know if your in the USA, if you are, Walmart sell a base E-Machines with no Monitor for $290.  I looked at this PC for my son, It has plenty of RAM and Processor speed etc.. It has an onboard Nvidia card (which will probably work), and the ability to add one if that doesn't work.

Let me know if I can be of any more help, you could send a private message if you wish.

Actually I have 3 open PCI slots in each comp. Did have the ATI card in one of the other Dell 2350's. Worked fine. Fried it though when the harddrive finally died. It was the Nvidia which didn't work. My comps are designed as office/server-attached comps. (Bought them from my old work, way cheap). Relatively small harddrives - 28 Gigs. The ATI also was a 512 card.

Appreciate all the help.

Where do I find Demo 2 or now Demo 3? Didn't see them in the download section.

Okay, I'm on drugs. My old ATI card was a 128, not a 512. Don't know where I got it was a 512.

Yes, I think you are right, its the 3D thing which is shutting down the demo. If I could switch it to 2D before the game opens, it might work. Ideas?

Also, 2nd. and/or 3rd. demos...Where can I find them?

Thanks.

I have a problem with the game.  I tried to play Borodino but when I start the battle the game drops out and goes back to my desk top.
