Austrian masses versus cavalry
« le: 18 janvier 2010, 23:43:54 pm »
Showed LG D2 to a mate last night.  I think there's a new sale there.  He was very impressed. :)

He asked questions about infantry and cavalry I thought I'd throw up here.  Being a miniatures player, he gaped a little at the regimental squares and wondered if he would ever see battalion squares?  (I wondered that too.  If a regiment has a single battalion, I presume it will just form squares by companies.  Eventually, I expect the game will incorporate regiments forming squares by battalions?  Probably a graphics issue rather than a game engine one)

He also wondered about Austrian masses (closed columns) and their ability to monster and intimidate cavalry.

I DL'd the patch 2 and got the doctrine editor working this morning (thanks JMM).  There aren't 'masses' as an option for the austrians there so the question remains...  (perhaps it's just a little low-level for LG?)

Cheers

AFAIK squares are represented by regimental squares so the size of them depends entirely of how many battalions the regiment has. My guess is that it is a question of the limitations of the engine. But since a regiment can look like several individual battalions in line or column it should be possible?

I would like to see a Battalion Square as well, we see Battalions in other formations, so why not a square as well ?, rather than a Regiment (with 3 battalions) in one square, we could have 3 squares......I expect there is a very good reason we don't have this, but in theory at least it would be a good "improvement" to have.

I believe there are simply too few men to represent a batallion square...I mean with weaker units even a regimental square appears like a "thin blue/white/green line"...I would also like to send forward the 1/23 IR Salzburg to attack at bayonet point but this simply can't be done, if the 1 equals 10 men number isn't changed...it would also involve considerable micromanaging...so I don't know if we wouldn't end up like TC2M with just taking command of a brigade and leaving the higher ranking positions to the AI...I really don't know what to prefer...maybe I'll stick to both games...and decide which way I want to play each and every day...

I think the problem (if there is one) with the Regimental square at the moment is that it is trying to be too big......if it were smaller, it would look more square and could be more ranks deep.

I agree, a Battalion square of say 600 men (60 models) would then need to be very tiny.
