Around 130 000 soldiers on this battlefield.. FPS is very good!
Another scale (1/2) is possible ;)

WoW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IMPRESSIONNANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Agree. The square is superb and very impressive.
And the Cav ?
-
It would also mean that the management of losses has been reviewed. For example when a cannonball hits a regiment, you can see 10 men collapsed instead of 1?
-
-
INCROYABLE !
-
A question, but with much more soldiers that shoots,is of course increased also the smoke on battlefield ?
-
Some answers...
When ? ASAP... ;)
Cavalry.. very soon.. just some adjustments in the parameters but a big part of work is finished
Losses : it's very easy for 1/1 because there isn't any other process to manage the return of 3D model
(just a short comment : in 1/10, the scale for losses is 1/3, no 1/10)
Square and depth : in 1/1 scale, the depth is 9 men.. and sometimes 18 for regiment with 5 or 6 battalions
Don't forget in HistWar, the square is built from regiment...
In the scale 1/10, the program tries to have a good distribution of men on the different sides of square.
For the scale 1/2 or 1/1, this process is natural.... in fact, it's more easy to control this scale ;)
Smoke : process no really linked to the scale. That said, I am going to rewrite the animation for smoke, fire and other fog..

And you rewrite explosion animation with smoke and fire of course??? Maybe in 3d

JMM sir you are the best!!! I just hope the ai can handle movement and animation of this. If that is so I would l really like to say that this game is seriously the best of all other napoleonic tactical games !

With the 2 scales (1/2, 1/1), you will be able to run HistWar on your PC...
Wait for the version 04a (HistWar 2) and the new demo but I am sure there will be no problem.

Well JMM the game would expand if you pull this off in 1 to 1 scale ratio and Mr. Darsh just posting some screenies in totalwarcenter and the guild total war! as well as post Mr. Jaquinots tournament video That how someone like me got to buy hw!

Bravo!
-
JMM mon brave.
This is the single best improvement to Histwar since it was released. At last we can see what the battlefield really looked like.
You continue to impress us.
-
AMAZING !!!
Bravo, JMM !
-
-
Absolutely stunning!!!! And there was me thinking that Histwar couldn't get much better. What a fantastic development :D :D :D

so people ll choose which scale they use for a MP before the battle? 1/1,1/2 or 1/10 ?

Just an option for each player.. 1/10, 1/2, 1/1
In MP, each one can play with his scale factor.

J'a ibon?

Great News ……..Thanks,
I Know your bee z but quick questions
- Will map elements be in proportion to Units. Example with a 1/1 scale will Town sizes be increased to accommodated more Units.
- Will all Map sizes (6K, 10K, 15K, Grand Map ) render the same size elements or will they be handled in the same way, that is as the map size increases the units get smaller and are stretch further apart..
- Will Units in 1/1 scale be drawn in there Historical style formations and correct company sizes. Here is a link showing example of what in mean http://napoleonistyka.atspace.com/infantry_tactics_4.htm (http://napoleonistyka.atspace.com/infantry_tactics_4.htm)
- Will we be able to identify how many squadrons a Cavalry Unit has in OOB.
Sorry if these questions have been asked or answered.
Thanks

So will any or scale 1 / 1 except for the guns that will be 1 / 2, but in the current scale, the guns were not represented in 1 / 1?
114 units which would give it approximately in terms of figure and the limits that the game can support? If I take the old scale, the game could survive any figures which would give 50,000 now 500,000 figurines

If I understand the concept correctly from my discussions with JMM, and he can correct me if I am wrong, the artillery is currently represented with a 1:1 scale.
The need to revert to 1:2 scale comes from the following dilemma.
The number of units is limited to 114 due to multiple constraints. To make oobs with as many canons as borodino for example a significant percentage of these units will have to be artillery units (as an artillery unit cannot have more than 14 canons).
To leave more space for infantry and cavalry it would be better to pass to 1:2 scale for artillery. This way the 14 actual canons would represent 28. Representing each artillery unit by 28 actual canons would affect the performance of the game as it increases exponentially the number of calculations the soft has to make in each cycle.
I think this scale (1:1 inf and cav, 1:2 artillery) is unprecedented and should make histwar THE game of reference to any enthusiast of this genre.

Nice to read you VC. I tought that you disapeared. I hope that you will join the MP folks soon.
-
Oh nice! As long as the engine does not equivocate the number guns and the time of their limbering and unlimbereing as well as gettin taken into account of the attack and defending as well as bombarding process too much so its not too slow but in comparison to historical and real life process of deploying the batttery and the speed of batteries moving around battlefield and such is proportional to the game is all good
AND yes making such scale will attract players from all shape and sizes if right publicity. Yes the old school graphics not in good stead with newer and younger players but screen shots of epic charges of cavalry videos of line battles (including charging into each other) as well as videos from mp games will help. as towards to graphic specification a lot of younger people will probably have up to date pc specs which allows scale to be played with no fuss. But keeping the option of the scale available to those that may have outdated pc specification will also help bringing casual gamers!

Thank you, I never really disappeared. I have been keeping up with parts of the forum and stayed in constant contact with JMM. Because of time constraints I have not been playing MP games but more pbem.
I am hoping that there will be people wanting to play it MP in the US so I can join in.

What a pity! I like the 1:1 scale modification but why is there the limit of 114 unit? What are the multiple constraints that can't be dealt with?
If possible, I prefer the 1:1 scale with all units (inf, cav, art) and also if that means that it takes longer to eliminate the multiple constraints.
-
why is there the limit of 114 unit? What are the multiple constraints that can't be dealt with?
This has puzzled me for many years, but I'm sure there must be a very good reason(s) otherwise JMM would have made HW to a "Battalion" level and not a Regiment level.
Think how good HW would be with Battalion squares, in 1v1 scale......but that is a dream too far I suspect.
I can understand VCs point about artillery, but how many battles really need that many cannons ?....not many I'd say.
Even using the max 99 (or 100) units you can still get a lot of guns at 14 per battery.
-
If it is to much work to set the 114 unit limit higher (I hope not), how about to make a automatic scaling for the artillery units. If the oob would exceed the limit, the artillery scale could set automatically to 1:2 from the software.
-
JMM has limited to 114units because of the technical limitation, the computing power is exponential for each new unit and for artillery isn't only a problem of power but also to permit more place for the regiments.

I know it is hard to grasp why there is a limit. But believe me it is for the program to run smoothly that such limitation is made. I am not sure how much programing knowledge you have, but a few months ago i started learning programing on my own as a hobby and i can appreciate now how things can look very easy while in fact they hide a very complex algorithm.
Each cycle (with each frame, a good game runs above 30 fps) the soft has to calculate:
1/ the position of each unit
2/ if each unit is in enemy range or not to be fired at and this implies checking if each allied unit is in range of each enemy unit
3/ if each unit is within sight of the enemy or not, again the test is made for every friendly unit vs enemy unit
4/ The status of each unit and that implies multiple calculations, cohesion, casualties, moral etc...
5/ if a unit should rout or leave the field
6/ if a unit is in need of support
7/ if a unit is detached or attached
8/ if a unit has an order or not
9/ if a cavalry unit should pursue routing enemy or not and that implies checking every unit within the cav range too see if their status is to routing or not. How you determine of the unit is in cav range? again you have to check every enemy unit to see if they are within a predetermined range from that cavalry unit. you have to do that for each cavalry unit.
And the list goes on and on because there are many other calculations done in histwar. So you see each additional unit will burden the software even more by adding a lot more calculations to be done. 114 must be the number where these calculations are still bearable.
I hope this was lcear.

So 114 number of units max per side thats equivalent to 500,000 figurines? Of soldiers and Cav? How does the square react with so many men will it be like a divisional square like in Egypt or like a regimental square? Will there be different animation of square as per se a box full of austrian or russian? Much like the improvised pike square formation in NTW
-
So 114 number of units max per side thats equivalent to 500,000 figurines? Of soldiers and Cav?
With the actual scale (1/10) the theorical limit (infantery only) is 50.000 figurines on the battlefield for the both side (200 infantery units of 250 men)
Now with 114 units and a scale 1/1 the theorical limit would be 570.000 figurines  (228 units of 2.500 men)
It's right JMM?
-

But now the max for infantry is not 4800 men ? 480 in 3D with scale 1/10.
100 slot for side x2 x 480=96000 figurines
after 114 slot x2 x ?= ? is limited at 2500 for infantry? or is always 4800 ?
this for me is not clear.
-
114 total "units" includes the CC.....the "combat" (Regt/Battery) limit is either 99 or 100, I forget which.
-
Sorry perhaps i understand 250.
Is 300 ceh max / 1.2 (average infantry) = 250000 men for side x 2 =500000 men with scale 1/10 =50000
with army only of infantry.
after with scale 1/1 =500000 figurines , if limit of 300 ceh remain.
-
If this 114 units inclued the CiC and the corps generals, we'll have 1 Cic (25 figurines each), 12 corps generals (7 figurines each) and 101 units in each side, the theorical limit should be: 25*2+12*7*2+101*2500*2= 505 218 figurines, not bad! ;)

Infantry
Scale 1/10 : limit : 75 3Dmodel per battalions; limit 6 battalions -> 450 3D model, 4500 infantrymen

JMM has already answered:
Losses : it's very easy for 1/1 because there isn't any other process to manage the return of 3D model
(just a short comment : in 1/10, the scale for losses is 1/3, no 1/10)

VERY IMPRESSIVE JMM !!! : :D :D
This is visually stunning, and you gave everyone a great gift.
You must be in the process of working out the code for the game
so we will be enjoying it very soon
MERCY BIEN !!!!
-

Using on line translator-
And Yes... still a little job my Grognards... and sometimes I wonder if there is interest in many gamers... unless of course you are conditional (in) supports the Machin
I'm sure there is a lot of interest in this new scale, from the old timers AND from others who have not yet purchased HW.
I look forward to all the MP battles with the improved scale.
-
Me too, I only really fight MP and you can't spend too much time admiring the Soldiers but I am looking forward to it. However, for me the Order bug is far more important
-
I want 1/1 scale NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. My work makes me crazy, DAMN!!!!!!!

So the cities are therefore more "dense" and more to resemble the cities as in villages?
-
Bonjour Mssrs.,
The evolution is astounding! ... I can easily recall the "La Grande Armee At Austerlitz" days ... I'm looking at the CD right now ... a very treasured possession ... 8)
But ... what about the cannons? ... :?
Cordialement, DoE

Do you mind elaborating on the "order bug"?

VC, there are a number of active Topics on the Order Bug since the last Patch. Here are a few threads:

Bonjour,
-
First time I saw this post wow massive

I can just imagine the Dead body fields that going to happen in this.

La 3D à de beaux jours devant elle... :) ;)

Vive la

Des nouvelles?/anti news?

Any idea's how long this may be ?....weeks or months ?.......a lot of people will be more interested in this game with 1-1 scale.

Weeks... Just some days for rest before resuming the dev...
A lot of things run fine but I have to improve some process.
And I must verify some calculations and modify the presentation of defensive lines.
JMM

Thanks, looking forward to this.

Nous attendrons.... ;)

Splendide !!!
I wonder when the charge of 10000 horses will sweep across the fields of Eylau...
What about the power necessary to field 100.000 men on our screens ?
Hope to watch this by Xmas time -or earlier ?

A little question JMM about scale 1:1.
If a player A has a computer enough old and the other player B (for PBEM or MP) has a good computer.
The player A start MP or PBEM with scale 1:10 (otherwise slow) the Player B can play with scale 1:1 or both with scale 1:10 ?

Right... each player can play with his scale... ;)

Very nice JMM.
Thank you for reply at my doubt.
-
Ca va être impréssionnant .. ;)

How many of us have a good computer for the scale 1:1.?
My PC is enough old.
Inter pentium 4, 3 gigahez,2 GB of memory,ATI radeon HD 3450

already testing the 1:1 - I can say that my "old" PC - DualCore 2,6 Ghz with 4 Gigs of RAM handles it without problems at all.....
I think that if Histwar runs well at the moment it shouldn't be much of an issue!
-
ok Count.
If you call your computer old, mine is prehistoric and you have not talk of graphics card.
Now JMM are working for optimize work for CPU for scale 1:1 and perhaps is early to talk.
wait still sometimes for define the minimum .
Thank anyway Count for reply, good to know this information.

There is also the scale 1/2. ;)

Thank Darsh for the spiritual comfort.
If I think well my corps with scale 1:2 or 1:10 will be easy to maneuver.

already testing the 1:1
You lucky bloke. What is it like?

let's just say - Borodino on 1:1 on a 1920x1260 (or so) resolution - and a huge screen.... - you'll never forget it!
(working on the historical deployments as we speak as well)
I can only tell you: all of you have something to wait for... IT'S AWESOME!!!!!
-
The deployements in the existing battles will be conform to the reality?

Yea, it is fantastic battle, many troops on small front 1,5 - 2 km.
And what map you use for this?

what I am trying to do here is to get all battles that come with the stock version of the game ready - and after that I'll be working on the additional ones...
it takes time as I try to get even the regimental starting positions ready...
-
Count , is it possible to have a screen with scale 1:1 for our friend Jacquinot.? That loves Borodino.

There are yet several major developments :
Division / Brigade AI
Great Tactical AI : improvement in order to get a reactive behavior (I didn't work on this part since one year.. really sad)
GT AI keeping the units place on the initial tactical planning; it's a big challenge.
Count von Csollich is working on the historical placement of units for the battle released with the game. Big thank to him 8)

Merci JMM! :D

And what about maps, we need to change them or not?

as requested a couple of screenshots taken from the Battle of Borodino:
I decided to show one action only at this time: the attack on les fleches:
this is a fictional deployment (as I'll post a screenshot for all historically deployed battles after I have finished them all :) )
but it shows you that the Russian starting positions are actually where they should be, occupying the field fortifications.
first screenshot shows French infantry massing in front of the enemy positions to attack head on!
second screenshot shows the Russian Infantry deployed in the fortifications - artillery (not seen here) is also present with some light cavalry in support (screenshot to follow tomorrow, I was thinking of taking a few screenshots of the large cavalry engagement on the left)
3rd screenshot shows a close-up of the fort on the far left. - deployed is a Yaeger-Unit
-
if you look closely - you can actually see the French infantry forming up in front of the fleches - in the 3rd screenshot...just imagine watching them close in for attack!
more screenshots tomorrow!
-
couldn't resist to post a last one for the night:
infantry forming up to attack the enemy positions: skirmishers are deployed up front with 2 bataillons formed en ligne with the other 4 behind in column....
second one shows that the commanding French Marèchal simply couldn't wait for his infantry to launch the attack and therefor had to send in his supporting light cavalry first to attempt of clearing some of these guns off the ridge! - Brave but foolish (if you had seen what I just saw :D)
-
WOW just WOW!!! really cant wait for 1/1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
-
Very impressive.
Thank again Count.
-
Thanks for these screens!
-
Superbe !!! ;)
-
Thanks Count,
Since the men seem to be smaller with this scall, maybe it will be worth to have a full HD screen (1080 or 1200) ;)

Sublissime !

I like much more Count pics.
With wide angle, cinemascope effect.(i do not know exact word).
Mass in movements, for me impressive.(also if with little men)
-
Fantastique! Vivement ce patch! ;)

Perhaps with more light is even better.
I saw 6.05 in the morning how time.
-
Just a bit smaller....
OK, with the fortifications on Count's pics, the men look like 2 fold smaller...
Anyway, it's a very good and impressive work and i look forward to see it soon on my PC ;)
-
Superb...
The landscape (house, trees, walls, heights, rivers...) will need some devlopment to match the quality of the new 141 deployments, but I am sure that it will come with time

Dear Count.
Russian redoubts(lunettes) on Borodino field was made only for artillery, infantry regiments stay between redoubts or behind, just one battalion of cover was in redoubt.

yes, I know :) - but with the request for pictures - I just put in some infantry there to give the impression on how forts look like with infantry as well looks more impressive doesn't it? :D (with arty only it looks rather empty as we can't put a single battalion in there... :s)
in the historical version there won't be any infantry in les fleches nor in the grand redoubt.... - I even picked the specific batteries :) - courtesy of the war archives
