Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars
« le: 02 janvier 2010, 06:24:56 am »
Lots of maps from the now very expensive and out of print "Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars" by Esposito and Elting can now be seen here:

http://www.dean.usma.edu/history/web03/atlases/napoleon/napoleon%20war%20index.htm

Not really useful at the scale we need for the map editor, but nice anyway.

Not the same maps, although they are very similar in style.

Just in case anyone is looking for it ( at least the maps ). It was reprinted as " The Atlas for the wars of Napoleon " it's part of the  " West point series ". They are the same exact maps.

There are some of us, like me, lucky enough to have bought the book many years ago.  Thank you NROTC!

My beloved used-book seller in town knew of my love of things Napoleonic and snagged me a copy some years ago.  My intent, once we get our grubby mitts on the editors, is to create a series of HW maps based on these maps...as a wannabe cartographer (life after next)...I can't wait...

Good find! I looked at the 1809 map of Ebelsberg, for example, and it seems perfect as a base source for an LG custom map. There's no scale or elevations, but you could find the same battle area on Google Earth, import it as a transparent layer into any good graphics program (Photoshop, Paint.Net), superimpose the 1809 map over that, then play with the scaling of both until the basic roads and features match. Google Earth will give you the elevations.  Once you get a single source map just the way you want it, size it to one of the designated map sizes used in LG and import it into the editor and have at it! Actually, all the steps except the final one could be done right now -- no need to wait for the game.

Though you should remember that Ebelsberg looked differently in 1809, the Castle-hill for example and the Town-bridge including the watchtower and the ditch surrounding the Castle/Monastery, all focal points in the battle, can't be seen anymore in Google Earth the way they were/some totally disappeared... a problem which all historians had with this particular battle and we have yet to find an answer... because the few paintings there are, aren't very helpful...

These would be good for historical battles, but what about other areas of Europe, say if you had a battle somewhere esle in Europe.

Alas, I wish it were possible to print off maps from here.  My German isn't all that good but I can't see that it is.  However, I wonder if it is possible to buy them.  Do you know, D3MO?

btw, the Moravian maps are gorgeous!

D3MO, can I just say thank you for this list of resources.  I've been tooling around in Italy and Bavaria and the detail is brilliant!
