Since the arrangement with BFC was cancelled, where do we pre-order it from?

     Hang in there JMM.

You know.....it is an instructive experience to want something as badly as your simulation-when I do not speak more than a very paltry amount of the Authors and Developers' language.  Anglo-English hubris normally goes largely unnoticed,  (especially with the Internet's english-speaking dominance).   You may be in for a surprise, many of us 'ugly americans' are amenable to laying aside our collective perceived 'arrogances' when other worthies can break through our self-occupation and command our attention, (grin)!

BTW-while I trace my roots back to Daniel Boone on one side of my family(along with a million+ others), my fathers' side leads straight back to Cpl. Jean DeMeaux, (formerly of Lafayettes' Legion), and a settler in the then 'wilds' of Nashville, Tennessee, lol!  So, quite literally without the French contribution, lol, I would not even BE here, hahaha.

As a 30 year Napoleonic Gamer, I await your release with great joy.  (My own favorite armies are the Legion de Pollanaise, the Kings' German Legion, and the Portugese Army).....then the Bavarians, the Russians, and the Prussians.  In my circle it was deemed somewhat "cheesy" to want to play as the French or English.  The French were simply too GOOD, (too easy to win with), and while the English were in the same club, they were just too small an establishment to take seriously on the Continent, lol!

The American Author, John Ringo, has an interesting translation of a letter written by a recent French veteran returned from Afganistan on his website.....relating his experiences with, and opinion of, the American soldiers he stood shoulder to shoulder with.  Makes good reading.....

Make this project live any way you can, Monseiur!  We are rooting for you with our support, and our purchase prices, whatever it costs!   ( and we thank humbly for your own 'blood, sweat, and tears'.....)

Dear JMM, Cher JMM
I hope you are not to depressed by the blow of ---------. Business is a hard thing. And I believe your work is more an act of love for Napoleonic wargame and all the ones that like to play those games and see the historical side of it. Therefore I wish you all the best and lots of strenght. And I will  certainly buy your game.
Many greetings

It seems its clear 'when' we could play LG. Was --------- finally only a 'barrier' for JMM?
Anyway JMM now presented us dates, not only possibilities. It sounds really great. I am not reliant on --------- and it seems JMM also not.

So, not good 'luck', only good final for the next really few weeks :)

First of all.. Thanks you a lot for your support.. It's important to feel this wave pushing me towards the final line

Today, the first task is to verify the English manual in order to put it on the server on Wednesday.

After that, I have to finalize the demo because there are some differences between the final release and the demo.

So, I read some interesting ideas about the marketing and I'll send Private Message to the different Grognards in order to talk about their ideas...

Again THX

Talk with AGEOD, they are also french, they have quality games and also a strategic napoleonic project, that in a future could be join with histwar to make a great tactic-strategic game. They have an excellent games support and a great community...

In the days before the net the loss of a deal with an established company could be the death knell for a project.
Now we have a means of global sharing of info & once the demo etc is out I for one will be putting links thru to it on my site.

We can all use the Histwar banners & urls in our sigs on every forum we sign up to, regardless of language.
Hopefully something as simple as this can help build a global interest & make this project deservedly successful.

I've been an avid watcher of the game for a long time now, and was very dismayed to see of ---------'s action.
But JMM, you are a fighter, and you will come through this.

You say that the manual will go onto the server next Wednesday.  This will just be for us to "look at" I presume, and not for downloading?

I will be watching closely to see how we will be able to buy the boxed game and manual.
Carry on the great work JMM.

well if this game is what we are hoping it is, i have no doubt it will sell via word of mouth alone

I wish that was true, Take command got GREAT reviews from wargamers, and every body tried to spread the word of the great games.
But as far as I know, non of the games sold very well, partly because fewer and fewer game stores sell pc games, they almost always only sells console games now, and the target market for these kinda games are directed thowards people they don't realy buy games online.
They are often of an older generation and often don't trust online stores ect.
Hell we know that many of the people over at BF that hung out in histwar forum, was quite aged, I think we have people 60-70 years old, often old school wargamers that have been playing with miniatrues since the 60s. it's a hard market to crack, many in that age don't have computers or don't trust them.
and many belive that computer wargames can never be as good as miniature wargames ect.
But if you can crack the target market, and if you can get TW players to try it, then the game might sell very vell

Yeah, I know sevral people that "will play anything made my CA"

This guy is REALY looking forward to Napoleon Total War, and I keep showing him pics of Histwar ect. and he says, "he's not realy intrested in the period"

So I had to ask why does he want Napoleon TW, and his answer was, becasue it was Total war.

So some people buy simply out of fanshon reasion, like people paying 500% more for some jeans just because they have a know brand lable.

But if you get just 5% of the total war gamers to buy this game, then you got like 250 000 copies sold

Titel: Re : NEWS...
Beitrag von: KG_Lehr am 08 November 2009, 01:53:17 Vormittag
I have been a TW player since the release of the first TW:Shogun.  While I expect to find entertainment in Napoleon: TW, a know going in that it will have to be a watered down mass market product.  CA has been going further that direction with each release.  American Indian LANCERS?  Come ON.....and the trailer for Napoleon is no better.

CA is trying to divert attention from their AngloCentric Bias & POV with their trailer, only to reinforce it with their towering unrecognizable caricature of Napoleon as a nearly daemonic arch-tyrant running rough-shod over the world, and especially England.  You know Empire:TW ship battles are beautiful, but that is as far as it goes.  Ships of the NEVER pirouetted like that in real life, and if they tried to, they would be unable to reload even one broadside until the manuever was over.   Not to mention that no ship could stop suddenly in deep water, either; or accelerate like they do in the game.

I think a closely designed game like Hist Wars' Les Grognards will be FAR more interesting for a much longer time.  Any simulation good enough to be able to reliably recreate historical battle effects and outcomes will be much more engrossing to play.  I noticed in one AAR that not only did the combat effects closely resemble real life, the players observed that while they were able to order their Corps to disengage and try a different plan, actually disengaging units that had been commited too far was very difficult.  This is one of the most crucial realities of Napoleonic Warfare, and I was heartened to see the game mechanics illustrate that.

I can't wait.....!

Well i  think  the point is that TW created a wide community based on fast online matches and not on historical research. That game prefer to take suggestion from history to make Arena like fighting making clans and so on..... So the TW customer  (by now) i think is not concerned on historical period and will buy a TW Renaissance, Civil War... Fantasy...space combat and so on... just to continue fighting online matches (i won't call them battles). It is a real different approach to the wargame; best say is an approach similar to soccer games or fighting ones in my opinion. That's not a bad idea, a wide community has been created, but (as the Balaclava charge)... "it is flampoiant... but it's not a wargame"

wow i've made it to the Histwar site at last and managed to register in French - oh la la !

I've been shadowing this game on the --------- forums 'forever' so it's about time I took the King's Shilling and got ready for this game, and joined in the debate...

A release before Christmas would be nice, best of British luck to JMM, and look forward to this series of games running and running.

A few nasty comments on the TW games - is any game ever perfect? I've played all the TW games and enjoyed them all including ETW ( which after months of play has never crashed on me yet) and I really look forward to NTW as well- these TW games are trying to show all areas of war on a grand scale and so must cut corners somewhere to make it playable and enjoyable, i,m sure there are many TW players here who see no problem playing both TW and HWLG!

Sorry I can only afford to buy 1 copy of the game - i'm also buying COD Modern Warfare2 and flightsim addons for FSX and got to save for ETW !!

I read a lot of speculations about the reasons for breaking the contract between BFC and I.

Since I have a confidentiality agreement with BFC, and BFC has one with me, that's about all I can say without being in violation.

That said, the sentence written on the BFC Forum by BFC itself "After 4 years of waiting we've decided not to wait any more." is totally wrong.

That's all!

Some news from JMM on french forum, sorry for the bad translation :

Here is some information with or without big importance : I will be absent for professional reasons all week long (right now, I am in a hotel) also I am not going to be able to help much...

Concerning Vista and Seven, and the problems: to see how to resolve them in the most elegant way.

It seems that there is a big problem when the camera comes in edge of map: it is not a crash - in the strict sense but the very strong overload of the graphics board due to erroneous plans of textures of not identified origin; let us say that it is less serious than a crash.
Teleportation: it seems to be the 3D engine which is at the origin of the problem. I am not sure that internally it works badly.

Tactical-IA: only the initial part is in place thus it is little reactive.

It is sure that it appears to be too much and that is it too much in my taste but I do not think that it requires a working mass to manage it.

The version of May was more accomplished but it raised certain problems of consistency: in other words, there was a 3D graphic engine and a 2D engine; it allowed to run on very light system requirements. But all the falls of the soldiers were managed by an independent procedure to put fallen soldiers in a coherent way. And sometimes, it was not good enough. I That’s why I decided that unifying the two engines was more appropriate BUT I believe that doing this I added bugs. Consequently : he may have mismanagements of the position of figurines in 3D while the internal engine does not seem to make any mistakes.

Gentlemen

I too wish Jmm and his design team all the support that is their due!!  I have been following this game's development, for many years and can assume that this games is a true passion for Jmm.

In fact suspect it will be his life's main work of art, which is inspiring for us all.

I will purchase your game sir and enjoy it and wish you all the moral and mental strength to take your game to the final step of self publishing.

Bonjour Messieurs,

Well said! ... We have had but just a small taste from the cask .... for some, a bit too sour   ..... but, it does not necessarily mean the entire vintage in the cellar is bad   :) ....

As I said before - this is something totally new and very, very complex .... thus, it is improbable it will be completely 'bug-free' on the first demo release ....

Also, I would respectfully urge the Beta-Testers to help JMM investigate these annoying (?) demo problems ....

According to schedule it should be ready for preorder today. And from the moment he made public the deadlines JMM respected all of them(the release of the manuals and the demo). I see no reason he'll delay the preorder.

Hello JMM,

as von Döbeln said, I didn't see any troops disappearing with the Montebello settings too.

It is a great pleasure to see the battle unfold, to feel napoleonic atmosphere, to listen to the thunder of the guns, to wait and hope for the orders you gave will correct carried out, to see your troops forming line and advance, to...

...as you see I like it...oh no, I love it !!!

Great news from the Frontiers.  The Tsar Alexander has scored a decisive tactical victory at the Battle of Torun over the Corsican Ogre!  Napoleon's army of 83000 is reduced to 47000 while the Tsar lost only half that amount.  Oh for the campaign module to pursue these french dogs with!!

The battle was fought on Montebello with the Montebello forces:

Sad to report, however, that as the Pavlov Guards marched on Torun, pursuing a retiring regiment of French light infantry (who seemed unaware of Russian line infantry behind them in the town), the french light infantry disappeared!  Ooorah!!

I'm finding that playing the game at about 20/60 gives a nice visual feel, though the cavalry is still pretty frisky at that speed.  However as my 'immediate' orders delay was still 30min, until first contact is made I ran the machine at 6/60.  My impression is that the battle, with 7 1/2 divisions on my side, took about 2 hours to play (probably about 7hrs game time).

Don't forget it's the free demo. there is a special system to avoid this software is used with other OoBs.

OoB for tutorials are used for the third tutorials.
These OoB don't run fine with the Solo mode. (and I forgot to disable this matching Solo - OoB of tutorial)

For the real game, this system is disabled and there isn't any problem!!!

Well I'm not claiming to be a spokesman for anyone except myself and I don't base my opinion on the number of people who agree with it. The simple fact is that I am waiting for the new demo and, in addition to it not being here, yesterday's announcement makes no mention of it. That's disappointing.

Someone needs a reality check here.

We are invited to purchase something that will certainly contain a number of significant bugs at release. It should not. Don't blame potential customers for the failings in the game. Promises to fix it later just isn't good enough. ... And this from someone who WILL pre-order, so don't imagine that the survey reflects contentedness.

In my opinion LG has dodged a bullet and been extremely lucky that ETW & NTW have no interest in producing accurate simulations, even though modders have done wonders with all aspects of ETW.

I understand why people are disappointed at the news after being teased with the idea that the demo would be fixed (a bit). Why wasn't it made clear that this news would relate to pre-ordering, instead of building expectations?

I agree - I want this game to succeed as much as anyone else, but I'm not just handing over my money on the basis of "it'll be alright on the night". The only answers that matter, in my opinion, will be contained in the new demo itself. I'm not convinced enough of the general level of objectivity on this forum to accept anyone else's word for anything.

You like reality of facts as I am. Indeed optimism and pessimism are two false views. Better going between.

We are invited to purchase something that will certainly contain a number of significant bugs at release. It should not. Don't blame potential customers for the failings in the game. Promises to fix it later just isn't good enough. ... And this from someone who WILL pre-order, so don't imagine that the survey reflects contentedness.
Of course the full game will reveal bugs. What is amazing with that? Take a look at ETW construct by a bunch of programmers and testers. Remember the many enormous bugs. Beeing realistic as I can, I claim it is impossible to create a big program free from bugs, above all by a lonely courageous person.

In my opinion LG has dodged a bullet and been extremely lucky that ETW & NTW have no interest in producing accurate simulations, even though modders have done wonders with all aspects of ETW.
In my opinion, you make a big mistake when comparing two evidently different programs. One favorise the reflex like other arcade games the other prone the thinking.

I understand why people are disappointed at the news after being teased with the idea that the demo would be fixed (a bit). Why wasn't it made clear that this news would relate to pre-ordering, instead of building expectations?
In your magnanimous, you could also understand why people are very satisfied with a release of the full game. Also nowhere it is declared the demo will not be fixed. Just a question of timing. First the full game the the demo (I bet, this is the intention of JMM. Why doubting his words?)

I think, if JMM stayed blocked on this demo, without releasing the full game (remember many testers say it is less bugged than the demo) he did a strategical mistake. Stop to be over-cautious and go for debugging the full game with all his components (doctrines, map editor, possibility MP, ...) .

Well, I made the gamble and pre-ordered, knowing that the latest demo was riddled with bugs, BUT.... one thing the demo showed, was that this game has so much potential. For me it was worth taking the risk.
I've seen other games (take Combat Mission Shock Force for instance!) that were 'filled' with bugs and were still released. But these games (like CMSF) saw patches which quickly improved the game. So, I've no doubts that HWLG will have patches that will improve in the time to come :!:

Everyone is entitled to do as he pleases with his money, of course.

IMHO, all reasons aside, as Strategy PC gaming is my main hobby, I consider worthwhile the mere supporting of such astounding efforts as LG.

As a personal belief, I am convinced that this will be a great game, and I have put my money where I have my beliefs. It will have bugs, and it will be frustrating at times, and it will be patched. But just the demo gave me much pleasure

Indeed, it's well worth the risk, I've looked forward to this game for over 5 years, I would have bought it even if the bugs were worse than they are now, it's all down to what LG is, one of a kind (for now at least) and I wish to be there from the beginning.  That does not mean I'm 100% happy with it, as GP and others say, there's never been a game released wothout some kind of faults somewhere. We have to live with that, JMM has said he will support this game into the future and that's good enough for me.

GrosPaul - I'm afraid that the only points I made that you did not miss entirely, were misunderstood. For example - the whole point of the comparison with ETW actually DIFFERENTIATED that system.

The real test will be whether the number and severity of bugs invalidates the mechanics to the point whereby it is not a simulation. On the basis of the demo, it does. I agree with Holdit and releasing a game that is known not to finished is a questionable act. These forums have always been devalued by those with a predisposition towards sycophancy.

Spot on. The opinions of the people on this forum can only be taken as indicative of ... the opinions of the people on this forum. People from the outside world who download the current demo are more likely to decide it's rubbish, toss it aside and move on than they are to log in here in order to check how their opinion stacks up against the forum's conventional wisdom. I'm assuming here that JMM's target market extends beyond these message boards.

Being a conspicuous feature of the --------- forums, f******** should be dreaded. I'm assuming here that HLG would be setting its sights a little higher.

I'm assuming you realize you're in the developer's forum here.  There will be a lot of people here who like the game.

Anyway, I'm invoking a corollary of Godwin's law:  In any debate about the merits of a game, someone will eventually invoke the F word.  Once the F word has been introduced in a debate, the person who introduced it automatically loses.

I wonder how many times i have to repeat this before it sinks in...

I. Like. The. Game.

Do you really imagine I wouldn't be here if I didn't?

I'm sure the invokation of such a law would would be very convenient. So much easier that addressing the real argument...

I think most people expected the news to be about the pre-orders as most people had been waiting for it for 10 years.

Corrected for you

I guess you people who are so upset with the demo haven't read any of the caveats that were released with it or don't believe the play testers that the demo does not represent the game that they have been playing. I can't believe that all the play testers are in JMM's pay or that they are concealing anything from us.The few games that I have play tested we were much harder on the developers than the paying public.

and in English, for the record..

Listen JMM, I have never, never, never said that I don't like the game. I have never advised anyone not to buy it. I have not claimed that it is stupid to pre-order it. I have no wish to just drop
HLG, and I don't consider that the hours spent playing it so far have been wasted.

I have my own opinion on the timing of the improved demo and I express it - it's as simple as that. There is no need to misrepresent it

People from the outside world who download the current demo are more likely to decide it's rubbish, toss it aside and move on than they are to log in here in order to check how their opinion stacks up against the forum's conventional wisdom.

The game isn't for everyone.  We all know that here.  But it is a great game for a lot of us.  I don't think the typical TW or other RTS game player will like the demo, or the game itself when it's eventually finished.  This is a game for serious wargamers and other students of Napoleonic warfare.  Some of them won't like it either.

A lot of us here really like the game.  That's why we're here.  We know that not everyone will like it, but we've already proven that many will.  And you know what?  This doesn't matter to us.  No one expected HW:LG to be a mass market game.

The real question is, why does someone say, "This doesn't do what I expected so it has to be wrong" rather than saying, "This doesn't do what I expected.  Am I missing something?"

Those who already know everything have nothing to learn.  Those who know enough to know that no one will ever know everything will get a lot out of the game.  You can tell which camp you're in by how much you've already learned from the demo.

No need to get upset, folks. All the opinions expressed here are expected. To summarize:
- Some people are genuinely convinced that this game is great and want to express their support by pre-ordering it
- Some people love so much their hobby that they try to support independent and innovative strategy game developers whenever they can, (pre) buying games, to try to help the business stay alive.
- Some people would like to pre-order the game for one or both of the previous reasons but do not have money for it ATM.
- Some people do not pre-order games, and only buy games after trying demos - and were not convinced by the first one - or after reading reviews, or after a couple of patches set in. Some folks even buy games only when they get reduced prices a couple of years after launching.
- Some people will probably not buy this game ever, because it is not of their liking.

Personally I am in the first two groups.

And of course, some people who actually will buy the game will be happy and some will be disappointed. It has happened to all of us, I am sure.

Now how about we move on ?   ;)

The ordering page displays an American flag icon for language (there is no such language) is regrettable. English is the language of Shakespeare - not Stallone.

Hi.  Someone from the outside world here. I'm getting ready to place my first ever pre-order :D
No matter how polished the demo -or the full game is for that matter, a majority of gamers will think it's rubbish because they're looking for a clickfest they can pickup and play without heaven forbid, ever reading a manual. This game is unique and deep, it shows in the demo despite it's flaws. I'm sure JMM's target market  is somewhat limited and not really inclusive of the twitch crowd.

I have ordered the game without any reservations. There are bugs admittedly in the demo, but I am confident that these will be either absent from the finished game or corrected with patches in the fulness of time. I have played the Total War series and while they are very pleasing to the eye (which is probably why they have managed to go on for so long) as a wargame they are completely simplistic. Take Command has a lot going for it, and it is probably the nearest you could get to a proper WARGAME until now, but Histwar is streets ahead. If you are unhappy with the demo by all means wait and see how the finished game turns out but all this whingeing before anyone knows what the game itself has to offer is not constructive and rather depressing. By all means point out the bugs so that they can be sorted, but all the nitpicking of the inconsequential  must be driving JMM up the wall. I have been wargaming Napoleonics on and off for 40 years, Histwar is something which takes this to a whole new level.

How on earth do you make that deduction? I HAVE read the manual and it makes 'interesting' reading. Those that have not read it may be somewhat taken aback.

In the fullness of how much time though? How much time are you prepared to invest in playing something that isn't working properly (and how satisfying would that be anyway)? Nice to know that you think JMM is joining us there.

Hopefully, the release will be much more polished than the demo and the bugs will be eliminated rapidly. With some experience in these matters, I do not believe this will be the case but would be delighted to be proven incorrect. It's a shame that the user interface, which was said to be temporary, has survived to release. Let's see if those daft '£' signs are replaced in the full game. A bit of a litmus test that...

I'm sure that the game has great potential and will be a unique contribution to historical gaming. So long as JMM doesn't come to any harm in the meantime, which as the sole designer, would be very unfortunate.

JMM - J'espere que tous vos efforts seront recompenses financierement par beaucoup de commandes. Le developement a pris beaucoup de temps - vous devez etre tres content que ce projet soit presque fini! Bonne chance!

Which deduction is that?  That the majority of gamers don't read manuals?  That they're looking for a clickfest (console games are pretty popular these days)?  That the game has depth, or that it shows in the demo?  That JMM's target market doesn't include the twitch crowd?

When you read the manual, did you make a list of corrections to help JMM?

You're assuming it's not working properly.  It's certainly working properly enough to be a lot of fun to play, and for a lot of people, too.  There are more people here who like it than otherwise.

This will depend on how you define "rapidly." Give a time frame and we can discuss how realistic it is.  How long have you been a professional programmer?  What game companies have you worked for?  Got a link to your Mobygames entry?  How many games have your name in the credits in the printed manual?

Zitat
Let's see if those daft '£' signs are replaced in the full game. A bit of a litmus test that...

I'd prefer to keep them, but that's just me.  Would you rather have # instead?

Zitat
I'm sure that the game has great potential and will be a unique contribution to historical gaming.

This is pretty much how most us view the situation.

So long as JMM doesn't come to any harm in the meantime, which as the sole designer, would be very unfortunate.

Careful there.
