I had a infantry in a fortified position- hamlet which came under heavy cannon fire. The infantry stayed in the game
 until it showed a strength of MINUS 121. What does this mean?

That means there is an issue... 
I'll try to fix this problem for the next patch...
Could you upload the file xxx.sav (folder save/battle) into the server Redmine?
