As my hand is tingling, I'm thinking about the use of the right button on the mouse for moving around in 3D.  I'm wondering if it is possible to nudge the view around Combat Mission style - pushing the pointer against the top to go forward, turning sideways from mid/top right and left, sliding sideways from bottom right/left, reversing at the bottom - which doesn't involve holding down any button.  However, I might just be being wussy and holding on to what I know.    Are such things mapable as a setting?  I presume not.

I agree, holding the right button down is not ideal.....I find the up,down, left and right arrows the best way by far, but the movement (at the moment) is very jerky and not smothe like the mouse control.

On the other hand I feel silly.  JMM et al have obviously become used to the right button so I probably will too, eh.

And, secondly, now I'm trying a pen & graphics tablet and that feels pretty comfortable!

However, I would suggest replacing having to SHIFT+indicate direction with mouse with the ability to slide either way via (only) the mouse.  It was not a feature in Combat Mission Beyond Overlord (CMBO) but was added in CMBB and CMAK and was a very welcome improvement.

If you press the V key it changes to "slow camera".  The keyboard scrolling is smoothed out and it's no longer jerky, but there is WAY too much inertia in the movement.  For example, if you're moving forward, when you stop the viewpoint keeps going well past the point where you should have stopped, and eventually flips over to look from the opposite direction.  This should be easy for JMM to tweak.

That slow camera tumble is an irritant, I agree.

I must say that, a week in, when I return to combat mission turns, my first action is to try to use the mouse in LG fashion.  It must be easier than I first thought, eh!  Bravo again, JMM

I would still prefer to use keys to move the camera since almost all other interaction is with the mouse. Using keys to move would be freeing up the cursor making it easier to avoid accidentally selecting units etc while moving around on the battlefield.

When you have a unit selected, press the space bar to lock the selection on that unit.  Moving the mouse over another unit will not select that unit until you press the space bar again to unlock the first unit.

Sometimes the unit gets unlocked if you go to 2D view.

Good tip! I would still prefer to use keys for camera movement though as it frees up the cursor/mouse for other simultaneous actions.

I'm back again on this one.  After some play backward and forward between the demo and my pbem games of CM, I do think it is simpler to push the cursor against the side/top/bottom of the screen and have it turn, advance or withdraw and for the bottom left or right to cause it to slide to left or right, than holding the right-click on the mouse or SHIFT+hold right-button on mouse.  I dont' know if this counts as the copyright of BTS for CM games or not.  Also I respect the fact that HistWar's system probably means you can curve around simply.

Nevertheless, on the principle that simplicity rules I find myself wishing for that CM style of looking around with mouse.

I find the up/down/left/right "arrow" keys are the easiest way to control a camera, it can be done with the left hand as you use the mouse in the right - if you need to.

I would also like to see a CM style camera control implemented in the game if possible.
